Electoral Roll Revision Updates for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh
Voter lists in the north are getting an update. Officials have confirmed that no Special Summary Revision of electoral rolls will happen in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh this year. Instead, a Special Intensive Revision is planned for March next year.
Reasons for the schedule
This delay happens because the process waits for the census to finish and for heavy winter snowfall to clear. The timing matches these regions with Himachal Pradesh for the upcoming work. Authorities take this matter seriously. Concerns that people living here illegally might change voter documents make this check very important for keeping records accurate.
Past problems, like the cancellation of DDC seats in Kupwara and Bandipora because of ineligible candidates, show why this scrutiny is needed. While other parts of the country finish their revision by the end of this year, these hilly regions will wait until the spring weather turns fair.

Farooq Abdullah warns of potential changes to state status
National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah has raised concerns about the future of federal structure in India. Speaking at a recent event in New Delhi, he said the 2019 reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir could be a model for other states if the current government stays in power.
Abdullah argued that changing a state into a Union Territory goes against basic laws. He specifically asked for the return of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. He also noted that the current elected government lacks enough authority and questioned the independence of main constitutional institutions.
Concerns for other states
M.A. Baby from CPI(M) agreed with these views. He suggested such actions could also affect other regions like Tamil Nadu. This talk highlighted a growing debate among opposition leaders about protecting democratic norms and federal balance across the country.
