Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday sharply criticised Rahul Gandhi, saying he is spreading lies about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists just to hide Congress's long list of election losses.

Shah said it is Rahul Gandhi and not SIR who should be blamed. "You should think about your own performance," he said, pointing out that Congress has lost election after election since Rahul took charge as leader and then president.

He referred to the party's weak record in states like Gujarat, Tripura, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, where Congress has struggled for decades. SIR, he said, only started after 2024.

BJP and JD(U) hold a joint press conference

BJP and JD(U) held a joint press conference too. Union minister Piyush Goyal challenged opposition-ruled state governments to step down if they truly think SIR-based polls are rigged. JD(U) leader Lalan Singh said the opposition's street protests are meant to weaken democratic institutions, not protect them.

Shah pointed to BJP's big wins in local body polls in Gujarat, Tripura and Rajasthan as proof that voters stand with PM Modi and NDA. Opposition INDIA bloc, led by LoP Rahul Gandhi, has filed a joint writ petition in the Supreme Court against the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, but the petition does not question SIR's constitutional or statutory validity.

Why the change of heart? Because SC's May 27, 2025, judgment on the Bihar SIR already settled that question. The Election Commission conducted Bihar's SIR based on its June 24, 2025, decision, and the apex court upheld it.

Missing from the draft voters' list? Election Commission has stepped in with a fix. Special camps will run across every polling station in Telangana on October 15 and 16, giving eligible electors a direct window to submit Form 6 applications.

He reminded everyone that Congress has been out of power in West Bengal for 54 years, Tripura for 33 years, and Gujarat for four decades. States like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have also rejected the party for decades.

On the INDIA bloc protests, Shah was blunt. He said gathering 8,000 people from 14 parties within a 1.5 km radius does not make you the voice of the nation. The real voice, he said, lives in villages, farms, mountains and forests.

His closing message was bold. He told Gandhi to get ready for another loss in the 2029 Lok Sabha polls and predicted a landslide NDA victory that would mark Congress's fourth straight defeat.

Supreme Court pushed back the hearing on pleas related to SIR protests and CEC-related matters to October 15. Justice V Mohana fell ill, which caused the delay. The bench, headed by CJI Surya Kant, also asked for a senior Delhi Police officer to be present. The officer needed to respond to allegations of assault on women journalists during protests. The court also issued notice on a fresh petition by NGO Association for Democratic Reforms challenging Section 16 of the CEC Act.

Take Naresh from Indira Nagar in Bholakpur division, Musheerabad constituency. Four votes in his family, including his own, were struck off. They have lived in their own house for 40 years. He told us he filled out enumeration forms himself and called his BLO more than 20 times before the deadline. Nobody picked up.

A big breakdown in the process

That is a serious failure. If a family that has lived in one place for four decades can get deleted from the rolls without any real check, the scale of the problem across Hyderabad district must be large.

CPI State Secretary and MLA Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao has raised a serious alarm over the ongoing voter list revision process, calling it a direct attack on democracy in India.

Speaking at a press conference at Makhdoom Bhavan in Hyderabad, Rao asked the Centre to remove Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar right away to restore public confidence in the electoral system.
