Manipur Congress Protests Demanding CEC Gyanesh Kumar's Removal
Congress workers held coordinated protests across Manipur on 28 September, demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. They raised concerns about how the Election Commission is functioning and the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
Workers gathered near the Deputy Commissioner's office at Porompat in Imphal East. They shouted slogans and held placards reading "Save democracy, save EC" and "Our vote, our rights". In Imphal West, similar demonstrations took place outside the Chief Electoral Officer's office at Lamphelpat.
What Congress leaders demanded
Congress vice-president Amin Shah said the protests are part of a nationwide campaign by the party. He called for Kumar's arrest and urged better protection of democratic institutions.
In Thoubal, demonstrators burnt an effigy of Kumar. District Congress Committee members also staged a protest at the Churachandpur district headquarters.
Election Commission has said decisions on the SIR exercise are part of its normal institutional process.

Manipur Congress Protests Against CEC Gyanesh Kumar, Tear Gas Fired in Imphal
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee held a protest in Imphal on Friday. They demanded the arrest and removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Party workers marched toward the office of the Chief Electoral Officer at Lamphelpat and tried to go inside. Security personnel used tear gas to scatter the protesters after a confrontation started.
The protest was part of Congress party's nationwide call to hold rallies outside state election offices on September 25. The party wants Kumar removed from his post. They also want an independent review of decisions and changes made to electoral rolls during his time in office. A second round of protests at district collectorates has been announced for September 28.
Questions Raised on How the Election Commission Works
MPCC president and former Manipur chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh spoke to the crowd. He questioned how the Election Commission is really functioning. He pointed to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's claims of "vote chori" and said the issue got fresh attention after reports came out that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections to several decisions on electoral-roll revisions. Ibobi said important calls were being made by the CEC alone, even though the Election Commission works as a three-member body.
The Election Commission has rejected any talk of a split within the poll panel. It said commissioners may express different views during internal discussions. That does not mean they disagree with the final decisions. The poll body stated that decisions, including those related to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, were taken unanimously. Reports had suggested that Sandhu and Joshi recorded objections on at least 14 occasions over a 10-month period. The issues included electoral-roll changes, voter deletions, and data handling. The Commission says these objections do not amount to dissent.

Manipur Voter List Revision Removes Over 1 Lakh Names
Controversy surrounds Manipur after the final electoral roll was released. Authorities removed 1.32 lakh voters, which is 6.33 percent of the total electorate. This special revision process raised worries about how it will affect upcoming assembly elections.
Election officials say this is a standard way to clean up the rolls. Critics note that the update happened while thousands of citizens are living in relief camps or other states because of recent conflicts. Many people lost their official documents during the unrest. This raises fears that they were wrongly removed because they do not have a permanent address.
Election outcome concerns
Constituencies in Manipur are often decided by margins of 1,000 to 3,000 votes. This large drop in the voter base could change political outcomes. The state now has more than 19.6 lakh registered voters. Still, removing so many people remains a major point of debate.
