Supreme Court is pushing for a negotiated settlement regarding the ongoing disputes at Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi and Shahi Idgah in Mathura. By suggesting mediation, the court hopes to repeat the way the Ayodhya case was settled.

Political and legal views

Political analysts say a settlement could end these long-standing issues but creates a tough spot for the ruling party in Uttar Pradesh. With 2027 state elections coming up, some feel a fast resolution might remove a key campaign topic. Others think the party prefers keeping these matters open to help with voter turnout.

Legal experts observe that Muslim litigants are thinking over their options. They see a mediated outcome as potentially better than waiting for a final court verdict due to the current legal climate. Supreme Court keeps stressing the need for a peaceful, out-of-court solution to avoid years of intense court fights.

India currently lacks a single, universal document that legally certifies citizenship for all its people. The Ministry of External Affairs recently clarified that an Indian passport is merely a travel document, not conclusive proof of nationality. Similarly, Aadhaar serves as a biometric identity number for services, and a Voter ID card is only for electoral purposes.

This legal gap means that despite holding these common documents, most Indians do not possess a sovereign certificate of nationality. While the Citizenship Act of 1955 defines how citizenship is acquired, it never established a standard certificate for the general population. Critics argue this ambiguity is not an accident but a structural feature that allows political projects like the National Register of Citizens to remain potent. As Shashi Tharoor has pointed out, this creates an absurd paradox where citizens are left without definitive proof of their own status. For those seeking to verify their electoral status in Varanasi South, Varanasi North, or Varanasi Cantt., official records remain the primary source of verification.
