Karnataka Voter Roll Mobile Link Mandate Raises Concerns
Required mobile number linking for online voter registration in Karnataka is creating big problems for rural and elderly citizens. Reports show that needing a unique mobile number for every form is stopping people without their own smartphones from joining the voter roll revision process.
Workers on the ground say many homes share one phone. This is common in rural areas like Raichur, Chamarajanagar, and Kalaburagi. This rule is a barrier for poor groups, including farm workers and migrant workers, who cannot follow the one-number-one-form rule. Election Commission wants to stop duplicate and fake voters. Still, some say this policy might stop at-risk people without internet access from voting.
Digital registration problems
Moving to a digital-only checking process has left many people stuck. They have no clear way to register or fix their details. Support from Booth Level Officers is not always available in far-off areas.
Karnataka begins massive voter list verification drive
Karnataka started a complete update of electoral rolls on June 30. Officials gave out over 2 crore forms to voters across the state by July 3. This big project cleans up voter data by visiting homes and using digital tools.
Field staff found 17,688 errors so far. These include people who died, moved away, or are listed twice. Kalaburagi gave out the most forms with 11.59 lakh units.
Voter data updates
Although Raichur is doing the most digital work, the state's total digital submissions are only at 0.1 percent.
