Assam CM Sarma Targets Congress Over Voter List and EC Role After Nagaon Bypoll Win
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma criticized Congress on Friday. This was after the BJP won the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election. He said opposition parties are busy blaming the Election Commission. Instead, they should reach out to voters.
Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Sarma said the opposition immediately attacks the poll body whenever BJP wins. His advice was simple. Go among the people. Work for them. Stop creating a ruckus.
Assam Voter List Concerns
Sarma raised a serious concern about illegal Bangladeshi immigrants on Assam's voter rolls. He claimed around 100 Bangladeshis were caught in Guwahati on Thursday. He warned that if such individuals are not arrested, their names could appear in the voter list within six months.
He said the Election Commission's job is not just to add eligible voters. It must also remove names that do not meet legal requirements. If it is the EC's responsibility to include names, it is also its responsibility to remove them, he stated clearly.
Opposition Protests in Delhi
Sarma also criticised opposition leaders for bringing protesters to Delhi. He called these demonstrations a tactic to pressure authorities. His advice was direct. Visit Assam first. See the real challenges people face here before showing political strength in the national capital.
The Chief Minister acknowledged that Assam has deported several people who entered illegally from Bangladesh over the past year. He admitted authorities can detect only a fraction of such cases.
Why Nagaon Matters
The Nagaon by-election result carries weight because the constituency has a large minority population. Congress had won it in the previous two Lok Sabha elections. BJP's victory here signals a big shift.
Under Indian election law, registration authorities are responsible for making sure voter lists meet legal requirements. This includes citizenship rules. Sarma's remarks keep the debate over electoral rolls and illegal immigration alive in Assam's political scene.

Nagaon By-Election Result Live: BJP Leads, AIUDF Second, Congress Trails
Nagaon by-election counting in Assam is showing a clear lead. As per the latest Election Commission of India (ECI) figures, BJP candidate Devasish Sharma is ahead with 59,865 votes. AIUDF's Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal is in second place with 23,492 votes. Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora is in third with just 7,668 votes.
Sharma is leading Ajmal by 36,373 votes. Bora is over 52,000 votes behind. Counting is still going on though. Numbers can shift, so a lead now does not mean the final result.
How the race stands
BJP vs AIUDF vs Congress is the main triangular contest here. BJP is looking strong. AIUDF is holding second place. Congress appears to be trailing badly.
Want to track the count yourself? Visit the ECI results portal at https://results.eci.gov.in/. Check the Assam parliamentary by-election section for live updates and final declaration.
Note: A lead during counting is not the same as being officially declared elected. Always rely on the ECI for confirmed results.

Gogoi Questions CEC Gyanesh Kumar Over BJP Padma Bhushan Remark
Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi has attacked BJP Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya for reportedly praising Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Gogoi says BJP's praise for Kumar raises questions about how trustworthy the electoral process really is.
Speaking to reporters in Nagaon, Gogoi made fun of Bhattacharya's suggestion that Kumar should get the Padma Bhushan. "Padma Bhushan? BJP will make him the President," he said.
Gogoi also made a serious claim about voter rolls. He said an "IT cell" has appeared inside the Chief Election Commissioner's office. He believes this IT cell could affect decisions on adding new voters to electoral rolls. "Now, Gyanesh Kumar's IT cell will decide if a new 18-year-old voter gets added to the electoral roll," he said.
He connected this to the larger political fight over voter lists. He accused BJP of trying to take control of the entire voter list. Congress is demanding Kumar's resignation. Gogoi also mentioned Rahul Gandhi's earlier call for the CEC to "turn approver" and asked Kumar to tell who is giving him directions.
Note: These are political claims by Gogoi and were not independently established. BJP and Election Commission responses were not included in the source material.

Assam Congress demands removal of Nagaon election officer
Assam Pradesh Congress Committee has written to Election Commission of India. They want to remove Nagaon District Commissioner, who also acts as District Election Officer. This follows an attack on a Congress campaign group at Borma Bazar in Samaguri on September 21.
Party leaders said they warned local officials about security risks. Senior leader Rakibul Hussain told the administration that former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel was visiting. Despite these warnings, people threw stones at the group and damaged vehicles. Two party workers were hurt in the incident.
Request for new leadership
Congress leaders now doubt if local election officials are neutral. They asked election observers to look into what happened independently. The party wants a new officer to manage the rest of the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election, which is set for October 6.

Congress Demands ECI Probe Into Attack on Leaders in Assam
Senior Congress leaders, like former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and Gaurav Gogoi, were allegedly attacked by masked people while campaigning in Nagaon, Assam. Congress has asked Election Commission of India to start a separate, independent investigation into what happened.
Congress general secretary Dr. Naseer Hussain called it a clear effort to scare Opposition workers and voters. He stated that local police did not use the required security, even though Assam Pradesh Congress Committee warned them earlier. Congress believes this violence is part of a plan to hurt the democratic process and keep voter turnout low.
Details about the incident
Along with the physical attack on leaders, people reported that reporters covering the event were also manhandled. Congress has asked for the suspension of officials who did not keep order. They also want Election Commission to keep all candidates safe, to make sure the election process stays free and fair.
