Kottayam

Oommen Chandy passing away creates a big gap in Kerala politics. A long-time leader of UDF, Chandy meant much more than just a representative for Puthuppally. He was the main person who kept coalitions stable in the state.

He had a unique talent for managing different groups within Kerala Congress. He also kept strong ties with the Christian community across Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, and Pathanamthitta. Without him, UDF now faces a hard problem. It needs a successor who can balance local popularity with managing coalitions behind the scenes.

Political test ahead

Upcoming by-election in Puthuppally will be the first major test for the party. Analysts are watching to see if UDF can keep its hold without Chandy's personal reach. LDF is likely watching these events, too. They are looking at the changing political map in Thiruvananthapuram and other areas.
