Election Commission of India (ECI) has barred three candidates who contested the 2023 Karnataka assembly elections from contesting any polls for three years. Their crime? Failing to submit their election expenditure accounts.
The order came into effect on September 24, 2026, and will stay in force for the next three years. During this period, all three cannot contest or hold a seat in either House of Parliament, any state legislative assembly or legislative council.
ECI used Section 10A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. The three candidates failed to submit their expense accounts in the required way and gave no valid reason for the delay. A release from the office of Karnataka's chief electoral officer confirmed the disqualification.
Who is disqualified
Those disqualified are:
- Basavaraj Bhimappa Bisanakoppa from Savasuddi in Raibag taluk, who contested from Athani constituency.
- Ramesh Bhimappa Mannuddar from Vinayaka Nagar, Sampagaon in Bailhongal taluk, who contested from Khanapur constituency.
- Shashikant Padasalagi of Darur village in Athani taluk, who also contested from Athani constituency.
For any candidate, submitting poll expense accounts on time is now clearly required. ECI is serious about this.
