UN Urges India to Release Protesters Detained After Delhi Crackdown
What the Protest Was About
The protest demanded electoral reforms and the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. CJP alleged manipulation of voter lists, but Election Commission and BJP have strongly denied these claims.
UN spokesperson Thameen Al-Kheetan called on Indian authorities to respect the right to peaceful assembly. He demanded the immediate release of all protesters who were detained without reason. This includes protest leaders, lawyers, and journalists. He also urged police personnel to show restraint.
Delhi Police refused permission for the protest. CJP founder Ab

Former Diplomat Backs ECI's Voter Roll Revision, Calls Criticism Distorted
Ex-Indian diplomat Bhaswati Mukherjee has come out in support of Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. She called the criticism against it a distorted narrative meant to damage India's democratic reputation.
Mukherjee is one of at least 124 former civil servants who signed an open letter to the citizens of India on Saturday. The letter aims to set the record straight on what she claims are false reports of vote theft and institutional corruption.
"We wanted to make people understand that a distorted narrative was being spread," she told IANS in an exclusive interview. Her point is simple. The revision exercise exists to update the voter list properly, remove deceased voters, add new ones, and flag illegal entries.
She specifically pointed to her home state of West Bengal, where she claims many illegal voters from Bangladesh have obtained false Aadhaar cards. They should go back to their own country and vote there, she said bluntly.
Mukherjee also urged citizens to help each other with technology during the SIR process. Not everyone is tech-savvy, and spreading panic helps nobody. If a genuine voter gets left out, re-enrolment is still possible.
On the question of voter rigging, she was firm. There is none, she insisted. India's electoral system is admired worldwide, and the country has even provided technical support to other nations on how to run elections properly.
Call to Defend Reputation
She also addressed the demand for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's resignation. Under the Constitution, only Parliament through impeachment can remove an Election Commissioner. Not through mobocracy or violence on the streets, she cautioned.
The former diplomat denied any sinister motive behind the letter. Her only agenda, she said, is to protect India's reputation as a growing democracy from being distorted or destroyed.

Thousands Detained in New Delhi Over Voter List Revision Protests
Indian police detained thousands of "Cockroach" movement protesters in New Delhi. Anger is growing over a contentious voter list revision.
Pressure on the Government
The large detentions have put new pressure on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government. Critics say the voter list revision process is not being handled fairly. Young protesters have been asking for transparency and fairness in the whole process.
Voter list revision matters to every Indian citizen. Make sure your name is in the latest electoral roll. Check your status at the Election Commission of India portal.

Protest Leader Abhijit Dipke Detained in New Delhi Ahead of Voter Roll Rally
Police detained Abhijit Dipke, the 31-year-old founder of Cockroach Janta Party, on his aircraft in New Delhi yesterday. He had flown in to lead a rally. The rally demanded that election commission chief Gyanesh Kumar resign over voter list manipulation.
Opponents claim a draft roll revision dropped about 130 million voters. The election panel says those were flagged entries. Voters removed by mistake can re-enroll, it adds. Fair point, but the protests continue.
Dipke said he expected to be caught
Dipke told officers he came knowing he would be detained. Police told him he was not under arrest. They said they only wanted his cooperation. Two senior group leaders, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, were also held.
He had led a protest in Bengaluru before traveling via Mumbai to the capital. Even with tight restrictions and thousands of security forces in Delhi, Dipke urged supporters to stay peaceful. He cited Mahatma Gandhi as an example.
The movement that grew online
Travel and telecom links were suspended in a lockdown meant to stop the protest. Cockroach Janta Party is an online movement that went viral after Dipke responded to Supreme Court Chief Justice Surya Kant's "cockroaches" remark about unemployed youth. The party now has millions of followers. It earlier helped force education minister Dharmendra Pradhan to resign in July.

Viral CJP Protest Faces Reunite in 'Season 2' Video Amid CEC Resignation Demand in Delhi
Abhinav Bisht, Muhammad Shan and Nikhil Verma, the faces behind the viral July Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests, are back together in a new video. Titled "Ready for Season 2," the clip has already passed 16 million views on Instagram.
The timing matters. On Saturday, October 10, CJP held a protest in Delhi calling for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign. The demand is tied to alleged problems in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. Critics have raised serious concerns about large-scale voter deletions during this process. The Election Commission, however, says the SIR is a normal voter list check.
Delhi Police refused permission for the gathering, pointing to public order concerns. Even so, over 7,000 people were detained across the capital that day. Security was heavy across Delhi.
CJP first got national attention in July during the NEET-UG paper leak controversy. Protesters showed up at Jantar Mantar, some travelling from outside Delhi. Bisht's reels, set to the song "Aaj Ruswa Teri Galiyon Mein Mohabbat Hogi," helped him gain over 9 lakh followers. The new Season 2 video brings back that same energy. The trio poses in front of a barricade while old protest music plays in the background.
People online reacted fast. "Biggest collab ever," one user wrote. Another called them "Legends in one frame."
For voters watching the voter list revision closely, the SIR debate is still a big issue. Questions about voter deletions and list accuracy keep drawing attention from civil society groups and opposition voices.

YSRCP Urges Andhra Pradesh Election Commission to Include All Eligible Voters in Local Body Rolls
YSRCP State General Secretary and Member of Legislative Council Lella Appi Reddy has written to Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission. He asked that all eligible voters registered with Election Commission of India up to July 15, 2026, be added to the electoral rolls for the upcoming local body elections.
He submitted this representation on October 10. Appi Reddy pointed out that the Commission had earlier said it would use electoral rolls as of February 5, 2026, for the polls. But many eligible voters finished their enrolment after this date and up to July 15 during the Special Intensive Revision process. Their registration was stopped after that.
Appi Reddy said these voters had already completed the required enrolment process. Their names were part of the official electoral records. Leaving them out by using an older version of the rolls would stop them from taking part in the voting process.
YSRCP Asks for Updated Rolls and Clear Rules
YSRCP has asked State Election Commission to use the electoral rolls updated up to July 15, 2026. This includes all approved supplementary additions and corrections. The party also asked for the same instructions to be sent to all relevant departments. It wants the updated rolls published on time so voters can check their details and fix any mistakes.
Meanwhile, YSRCP State Coordinator Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy addressed the party's Legal Cell meeting. It was held at YSRCP Central Office in Tadepalli. He asked the Legal Cell to act as a protective shield for candidates in local body elections. Legal support should be available from the nomination stage right through to counting.
Sajjala recommended setting up these support groups right away:
- District-level legal war rooms
- Constituency-level task forces
- State-level coordination system
He also questioned why the government is in a hurry to hold local elections before the Special Intensive Revision process is done and final electoral rolls are out. Holding elections before new eligible voters are included would take away their right to vote, he said.
He also asked that the BC Reservation Commission report be made public. The criteria for setting reservation percentages should be shared with everyone.
General Secretary Ponnavolu Sudhakar Reddy said the Legal Cell has always helped party workers facing cases, arrests, and harassment. Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy said no nomination should be rejected on technical grounds. Legal help should be given right away in such cases. Malasani Manohar Reddy called for 24-hour legal help across the state. He asked that task forces be set up without delay.
The meeting ended with a resolution to give full legal support to YSRCP candidates from nomination through counting in the local body elections.

Sonam Wangchuk Calls Delhi Situation an Undeclared Emergency
Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has called the current Delhi situation an "undeclared emergency" after authorities detained opposition leaders, student activists, lawyers and journalists ahead of a big protest.
The protest was organized by the Cockroach Janta Party. They want Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign over problems in voter list revision under Special Intensive Revision and Form 6 registration issues.
Detentions and Wangchuk's Response
Wangchuk was shaken by the arrests. He believed peaceful demonstrations would be allowed in the world's largest democracy. Clearly, that is not happening.
Former chief ministers Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee, Pinarayi Vijayan and Manik Sarkar were among those detained as they tried to join the protest in Delhi.
Heavy security and restrictions were put in place across the national capital. Wangchuk has given authorities 24 hours to release all detainees. If that does not happen, he says he may consider a hunger strike or a march in Leh or Delhi.
Wangchuk asked the government to solve the issues through dialogue and avoid more conflict. He hopes no extra protest will be needed.

Aaditya Thackeray Demands Gyanesh Kumar Exit Over Poll Bias Claims
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray made a strong demand at India Today Mumbai Conclave. The Worli MLA said Election Commission official Gyanesh Kumar needs to be removed over alleged poll bias during the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
Thackeray pointed out that many legitimate voters were left out during the SIR process. He called it a serious attack on democracy and said the opposition will not sit back quietly.
He also defended his support for civic and local demonstrations, saying these public movements show real public concern and are not just about party politics.
Thackeray added that this has been a lost decade for India. He pointed to bad infrastructure, economic slowdown, and unfulfilled farmer relief packages in drought-hit areas of Maharashtra. He is confident that future elections will reward honest, public-focused representatives.

Thousands Detained as Cockroach Movement Protests Voter List Revision in New Delhi
Thousands of protesters were detained in New Delhi on Saturday. The youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) tried to hold a large protest. They were against Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision of voter lists.
Police moved fast to block the protest before it started. Demonstrators heading to Jantar Mantar were stopped at checkpoints across the capital. Buses, cars, and other vehicles were searched on key routes into New Delhi. Several CJP leaders were detained right after landing at Delhi airport from Mumbai. Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka were among them. A video shared by the party showed police boarding the aircraft to take them into custody.
Why the protests are happening
The dispute is over Special Intensive Revision. It has removed more than 130 million names from voter lists nationwide. The opposition and CJP say this has taken away voting rights from millions of eligible people. They want Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign. Election Commission and the government reject claims of voter manipulation. They say the revision only removes duplicate and ineligible entries.
CJP movement started online in May. It first got attention over alleged exam paper leaks. Those earlier protests forced Modi's education minister to resign in July. Now the voter list issue has become the movement's main focus. Opposition parties are backing it, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. He was briefly detained by police in recent days.
Opposition lawmaker John Brittas criticised the strong police response. "Is there a democracy in this country? A total siege over the city," he said. He was detained soon after. BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra called the demonstrators "anarchic elements." He said the protest was a "flop show."
Mobile internet restrictions were imposed in parts of New Delhi. Gatherings of five or more people were also banned. Anti-riot vehicles with tear gas launchers were stationed along major routes. Some protesters still broke through police cordons. They chanted slogans against Modi and election authorities.
State elections in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat are coming next year. The political stakes are high. National elections are still far off, but this movement is clearly growing.

Police Complaint Filed Against Abhishek Banerjee Over Rejinagar Bypoll Social Media Post
A Returning Officer for Election Commission of India has filed a police complaint against Trinamool Congress general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee. The complaint is about misleading information he shared on social media regarding the Rejinagar Assembly bypoll results.
During counting on Friday, Abhishek posted that BJP candidate Sakharav Sarkar got 909 votes at Booth No. 109 in Rejinagar. That booth only had 772 registered voters, so the numbers did not add up. The district electoral officer and district magistrate quickly rejected the claim. As per the electoral roll, the booth had 1,109 registered electors and 972 votes were actually polled.
On Saturday, the Returning Officer filed a police complaint at Rejinagar Police Station. It is still not clear whether Abhishek Banerjee will be called in for questioning.
Abhishek and Mamata Banerjee are currently in New Delhi. They are taking part in a movement demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Bypoll Details
The Rejinagar and Nandigram Assembly bypolls took place in East Midnapore district of West Bengal on October 6. Results were declared on October 9. BJP candidates won both seats with big margins, taking the party's total to 209 in the 294-seat West Bengal Assembly.

Delhi Metro Keeps 45 Stations Closed Till 10 PM Over CJP Protest
Commuters in Delhi are dealing with major travel problems on Saturday. DMRC has kept 45 metro stations closed for entry and exit until 10 pm, four hours past the original 6 pm deadline.
This happened because of heavy security arrangements after Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) called for a protest. Protesters want Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign. They say he manipulated voter lists during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. They also flagged problems with Form 6, which is used for voter registration.
Which stations are affected
Security agencies put out a revised service update after new checks. They say they will keep watching the situation and share any new changes as things develop. The lockdown started at 9 pm on Friday. Delhi Police had requested it urgently to stop large crowds from gathering near sensitive areas.
Key interchange stations hit include Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, Patel Chowk, Janpath, Mandi House, ITO, Kashmere Gate, and New Delhi. Most of these stations kept interchange access open under earlier notices. But New Delhi metro station was fully blocked for both entry and exit.
With heavy security across central Delhi, commuters are advised to check updated transit notices before leaving home. Stay aware and plan your route carefully.
