Latest Voter List & Election Updates in India

Check your voter status via SMS
Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls is happening across the country. Many people want to confirm if their details are updated. Checking this status using a mobile phone is easy.
Check voter status
Send an SMS in the format ECI EPIC Number to 1950. The Election Commission will reply with voter details if they are in the records. If there is no response, contact a local Booth Level Officer to verify the status. This is a simple way to make sure a name is on the list. For those living in New Delhi, check the Delhi electoral rolls for historical reference.

Gen Z Party Protests Voter Roll Changes, Seeks Election Chief's Resignation
Hundreds of supporters from the Gen Z-led Cockroach Janta Party took to the streets in Mumbai on Friday, waving Indian flags and demanding that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar resign. The protest was short but loud. The party wants the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls stopped right away.
These protests are part of a nationwide campaign against voter-verification drives that critics say have removed millions of eligible voters from the lists. The Election Commission disagrees. It calls the exercise a clean-up of duplicate, deceased and ineligible entries.
CJP spokesperson Saurav Das said the agitation will run through October, with stops planned in Goa, Kolkata and Bangalore. In Delhi, police stopped a separate group of student protesters from gathering and shut nearby metro stations for a while.
Same-day developments
The timing matters here. On the same day, the commission directed officials to register newly eligible voters and those left out of the rolls. It looks like a move to ease tensions. The INDIA bloc has already announced marches to Election Commission office from October 6.

Ex-SC Judge Lokur-Led Panel Begins Review of EC's Special Intensive Revision
A five-member independent commission led by former Supreme Court judge Madan B Lokur has started looking into Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. This matters a lot for voters who are anxious about their names staying on the list.
The panel was formed by Lawyers Association for Constitution. It will check whether the SIR is valid under the constitution and existing laws. It will also study how the SIR works and judge its effect on eligible voters. Beyond that, it will see whether real citizens were kept on the roll and whether people who shouldn't be there were removed properly.
The other members are former Supreme Court judge A K Patnaik, former Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court Badar Durrez Ahmad, and former judges Rekha Sharma and Anjana Prakash.
Public Hearings and Timeline
Public hearings are planned across the country. Full and regional benches will visit different places to record views of affected citizens, civil society organisations and experts. Senior lawyers like Kapil Sibal, Prashant Bhushan, Chander Uday Singh, Prashanto Chandra Sen, Raju Ramachandran, Rebecca Mammen John, Warisha Farasat and Vrinda Grover will give legal advice to the commission. The report is expected by December 2026.

Maurya Backs SIR, Says Ineligible Names Removed From Voter Rolls
Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya has called the Election Commission's work historic. He said the BJP fully supports the SIR process. Speaking to journalists at Police Lines in Kanpur, he claimed that names of ineligible people added to the voter list due to appeasement politics are now being removed.
Fair elections and an accurate voter list are top priority for BJP, Maurya said. He also claimed the party will form the government in Uttar Pradesh for a third consecutive time in 2027.
Targeting Samajwadi Party
Maurya described Akhilesh Yadav's PDA as Parivar Development Agency. He alleged that it protects goons, criminals, mafia and rioters. Attempts to secure votes by dividing Hindu society will not succeed, he added.
Maurya was in Kanpur as chief guest at the Namo Seva, Ankahi Kahaniyan programme. It was organised at TSH under BJP's Seva Sankalp Abhiyan.

Fadnavis Rejects CJP Protest Demanding CEC Resignation Over SIR
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday called the CJP protest at Shivaji Park in Mumbai a fake narrative against the Election Commission.
CJP activists and civil society groups gathered at Shivaji Park demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. Mumbai Police had denied permission for the gathering.
Fadnavis said the matter lost its basis after the three Election Commissioners held a recent press conference. He is confident the claims will not hold up.
Why Leaders Are Questioning the Protests
Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar questioned why street protests were needed. The Election Commission had already announced the SIR schedule and procedure. Citizens and parties can file applications, raise objections, attend hearings and submit documents through the legal channels available to them.
Shelar called the agitation the grammar of anarchy. He cited Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's belief in constitutional methods for resolving disputes. He also pointed out that safeguards are in place so eligible voters are not left out of voter lists.
Shiv Sena spokesperson Jyoti Waghmare also criticized the protest. She alleged it aims to spread misinformation and fear about the SIR exercise, which is meant to remove ineligible entries, including those of illegal immigrants, from voter lists.

EC Re-enrolment Drive Offers No Relief to West Bengal Voters Under Adjudication
Election Commission has announced a special drive to add back voters who were left out of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) rolls. The drive also covers first-time and young voters.
During this drive, Booth Level Officers will find voters who were left out of SIR rolls and add them back if they are eligible. There is a catch for West Bengal though. Voters whose cases are still under adjudication will not get any help from this drive.
What this means for West Bengal voters
So if you are a West Bengal voter stuck in the adjudication process, this announcement does not change anything for you. The EC has not shared any separate option for such cases yet.
Election Commission Directs Awareness Campaigns on SIR
Election Commission has told all election officials to run awareness and voter drive activities through schools, colleges, and local programmes. Systematic voter education and electoral participation activities, commonly known as SVEEP, will be a key part of this push.
Officials have also been asked to keep a close watch on how the campaign is doing. Regular monitoring will happen, and progress will be tracked closely.
Why this matters now
This comes at a time when opposition parties are raising serious concerns about the Special Intensive Revision process. Several political groups have accused Election Commission of removing eligible citizens from electoral rolls. Data from election authorities tells a different story too. Voter rolls across nine states and three Union Territories actually fell by 10.2 percent after the SIR was carried out. More than 60 lakh names of deceased voters were removed during this exercise.
There have also been reports of internal disagreements within the Commission about how the SIR was handled. Election Commission has clearly stated that every decision linked to the SIR was taken unanimously by all members.

Telangana MP Demands Election Chief Resignation Over Voter Roll Concerns
Telangana Congress MP Gaddam Vamsi Krishna has asked Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign, saying the voting process is failing ordinary voters.
Gaddam, the Lok Sabha MP from Peddapalli, pointed out a painful reality that many Indian voters know well. Keeping your name on the voter list often means repeated trips to government offices. People run around and still risk losing their right to vote. "If voters ultimately lose their right to vote despite making these efforts, it raises serious questions about their democratic rights," he said.
He said 130 million voters had lost their constitutional right and asked Election Commission to give a clear explanation.
The MP also raised concerns about the 2023 law on the appointment of Election Commissioners. The law set up a selection committee with the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, and a nominated Union Cabinet Minister.
Call to protect voting rights
"Democracy does not belong to any one person or institution. It is the right of every Indian. Our struggle will continue until every citizen's right to vote is protected," Gaddam said.

Lawyers' Body Forms Ex-Judges' Commission To Examine SIR's Legality, Impact
A lawyers' body has set up a commission of former judges. The commission will study whether the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists is legally valid. It will also look at how SIR affects voters across the country.
The panel will review the process closely. It will check the impact of SIR on electoral rolls. It will also see if the process follows the law as it stands today.
Why This Matters for Voters
This step matters for every voter who might be affected by changes to the voter list. Such revisions, if not done properly, can lead to eligible names being dropped or errors creeping in.
Legal experts and citizens should keep a close eye on what the commission finds. The outcome could shape how future voter list revisions are carried out in India.

Pinarayi Vijayan Demands CEC Gyanesh Kumar Resign After Delhi Protest
Former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has asked for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar after several CPI(M) leaders and youth activists were detained during a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.
Vijayan posted on X condemning the arrests of MA Baby, Brinda Karat, and student-youth activists who were peacefully demonstrating against the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision exercise. He called it an attack on democratic rights.
What Vijayan Said
His stance was firm. The Election Commission cannot hold public trust when its actions keep raising serious questions about the integrity of the electoral process. Vijayan said Gyanesh Kumar must take responsibility and resign. He also criticised the Modi government for using police force to stop demands for electoral transparency.
CPI(M) General Secretary MA Baby joined the protest and was equally vocal. He said Kumar had been breaking rules that govern the Election Commission's functioning, and demanded his removal. He told reporters that thousands of youth and student leaders from SFI and DYFI had come to Delhi from across the country for this mobilisation. 'Till he is removed, the student youth movement will continue,' Baby said directly.
Brinda Karat also called for Kumar's removal and asked for an immediate halt to the SIR exercise, along with changes to the 2023 law governing the Election Commission.
The protest went ahead even though Delhi Police denied permission and put in place restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023.

Kharge Demands Removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar, Lists Five Demands on Electoral Rolls
New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has demanded the immediate removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, calling him a puppet of the Union government at

Akhilesh Yadav Says BJP Must Go for Election Commission Impartiality
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said on October 2 that constitutional bodies, including the Election Commission, cannot work fairly as long as the BJP is in power. He was talking to reporters in Lucknow.
Yadav said both the central government and the poll body are facing heavy scrutiny over the Special Intensive Revision exercise. He accused BJP and the Election Commission of working together to run elections. His comments came as the SIR process was already causing a growing controversy.
As per a report by The Indian Express, Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi raised objections at least 14 times over ten months on matters related to the SIR exercise and other electoral decisions. The reported concerns involved Form 6, voter deletions, and access to electoral-roll databases.
The Election Commission rejected these reports. It said such queries and inputs during the draft stage are part of the normal admin process, not disagreement. The Commission also said decisions on the SIR schedule were taken unanimously.
Protests broke out at Shivaji Park in Mumbai where activists of Cockroach Janata Party and other groups pointed out problems in the SIR exercise. At Jantar Mantar in Delhi, SFI and DYFI members along with opposition leaders demanded removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Many opposition leaders were detained under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023. Among them was AAP MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj. The INDIA bloc has planned more protests, including a programme on October 6 and a big rally in Delhi on November 1.

CJP Protests Across Cities Demand CEC Gyanesh Kumar Resignation Over Voter Roll Changes
Cockroach Janta Party, a Gen Z political group, started a nationwide campaign on Friday. They are demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged voter roll manipulation.
Protests hit Mumbai
Hundreds of CJP supporters gathered at a protest site in Mumbai. They waved Indian flags and shouted slogans against Kumar. Some carried placards reading "THE JANTA HAS A SPINE, GY..."
